Legacies Beyond Doubt:
The Stewardship of Sen. Bala Moh'd

Along with other states in Nigeria, Bauchi State by May 29, 2027, will be thrown into 'mourning' the exit of one of its best governors ever, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Muhammed who came, saw and conquered underdevelopment with passion. He mortgaged his comfort to serve with dexterity and for posterity, bequeathing lasting legacies for coming generations.
Governor Bala Muhammed has undoubtedly set the pace in technological, human and industrial development of Bauchi State.

Seven years ago, when he took the Oath of Office as governor of Bauchi State, many observers and armchair critics viewed his emergence through the prism of politics. Some rated him as a grassroots politician whose greatest strength was in his ability to connect with ordinary people. Others wondered whether he possessed the administrative acumen of governance, depth and the required vision to govern one of Nigeria's most complex states, Bauchi. Within his first 100 days in office in 2019, those questions were answered through implementation of his blueprint.

Today, Governor Bala stands before history as a leader who has quietly but steadily transformed governance in Bauchi State through his laudable programmes spiced with sincerity of purpose and determination. He painstakingly introduced a blueprint built around more development opportunities for all, realistic reforms and enhanced peace and security delivered in a sterling and superlative manner.

What distinguishes the Bala administration is not merely the number of projects executed over the years but deliberate effort to ensure that development reaches communities that had long been neglected and abandoned. Across the three senatorial districts of the state, standard roads have been constructed, bridges built, schools renovated and new ones built and equipped, healthcare facilities upgraded, and economic opportunities expanded. Seven years after, there is visible evidence that Bauchi State has come of age and moving on the fast lane of development.

Infrastructure as the face of progress, there is no other place that the impact of Bala's administration more evident than in physical infrastructural development. Roads construction and rehabilitation have become defining features of his government. Across urban centres and rural areas, residents have witnessed unprecedented interventions aimed at opening up forgotten communities and stimulating economic activities.

One of the administration's most celebrated projects of historical significance is the completion of newly created dualized township roads, which is geared to improve connectivity between major economic hubs within the state. The governor also sustained work on several township roads and internal road networks that have significantly eased transportation challenges.

In Azare, Alkaleri, Bauchi, Toro, Misau, Darazo, Dambam, Tafawa Balewa, Gamawa, Bogoro etc, motorists and residents can point to completed and ongoing projects that have reduced travel time and enhanced commercial activities.

The administration continues to work on strategic bridges and drainage projects designed to tackle perennial flooding, a challenge that has affected several communities for years. For many residents, these projects are not mere statistics on paper; they are visible improvements that have changed daily life. A journalist, who hitherto spent hours navigating bad roads within the state searching for what to make the day's news, now moves at faster time for same purpose in the absence of potholes and worn out tarred roads where they existed.

A farmer now moves his farm produce from his remote community to urban centres with greater ease. School children no longer wade through muddy pathways to access their schools. These are practical benefits of governance provided by Bala Muhammed.

The professionally constructed Bauchi flyovers have changed the landscape. Among the signature projects of the administration are the two flyovers and road expansion projects in Bauchi metropolis. The ongoing road projects accompanied with bridges and drainages in other urban centres have become symbols of a government determined to modernize transportation infrastructure and prepare the state for future growth. When completed, these projects will significantly ease traffic congestion, improve road safety and enhance economic growth.

For many indigenes and well wishers, the flyovers are more than concrete structures. They represent a statement of ambition-------evidence that the state is thinking beyond immediate needs and investing in long-term prosperity.

One of the strongest aspects of the Bala Muhammed development strategy has been his emphasis on inclusive development. Unlike many administrations that focus almost exclusively on major cities, Bala has directed significant attention to rural communities hitherto neglected and almost forgotten. Roads that had remained impassable for decades have received adequate attention. Rural electrification projects have improved access to power in several rural communities.

This approach reflects the governor's belief that development should not be confined to urban centres alone. By bringing government closer to rural communities, the administration has reduced feelings of neglect, abandonment and exclusion while creating opportunities for economic growth and self-reliance at the grassroots.

Not only that, the administration has recognized that sustainable development depends largely on human capital. Across the state, schools have undergone intensive renovation and rehabilitation, while brand new ones were provided to deserving communities. Classroom blocks were constructed and equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Conducive learning environments improved and educational infrastructure upgraded.

The Bala Muhammed led administration has continued to provide the necessary support to tertiary institutions while expanding access to quality education at primary and secondary levels. Through scholarships and educational support programmes, many students have been able to pursue academic aspirations that might otherwise have remained out of their reach.

Education remains one of the strongest tools for combating poverty, and the administration's investments in this sector are expected to yield long term dividends.

In the area of healthcare delivery, that is another area where the administration recorded tremendous success. Several primary healthcare centres were renovated and equipped to improve service delivery at minimum cost. Medical facilities across the state received upgrades aimed at bringing quality healthcare closer to the people.

The emphasis on primary healthcare is particularly significant because it directly affects ordinary citizens, especially women, children and rural communities. For expectant mothers, improved healthcare facilities can mean safer deliveries. For children, it means better access to immunization and preventive healthcare services.

These interventions may not always attract the publicity associated with massive infrastructure projects, but their impact on human lives is profound.

After all the commendable efforts of Governor Bala Muhammed for projecting the global rating of Bauchi State to higher pedestal, he is by Constitutional provision tidying his table for exit on May 29, 2027, and what does he deserve from the people in appreciation as a parting gift?

First, he deserves fervent prayers for a successful exit. Secondly, Bauchi South desires him in the 11th Senate as its Senator based on the strength of his stewardship and courage. Finally, his party, Allied People's Movement (APM), deserves support as a pay back.

Whichever way, Governor Bala Muhammed is exiting power as an accomplished leader who deployed wisdom, courage, perseverance and his best for the good of all. We shall surely miss a pragmatic and focused leader who changed the face of Bauchi State, and humanity.
